Steelhead belong to the same species as rainbow trout. But where rainbow trout stay in fresh water all their lives, in the wild, steelhead are anadromous which means they migrate into the ocean, change colour and get much, much larger than rainbow trout. Our healthy and flavourful steelhead are native to the Pacific Northwest and are favoured by seafood lovers everywhere. Steelhead are characterized by their bright orange/red coloured flesh, rich buttery flavour, and firm, moist texture. Organic Ocean Steelhead is high in omega-3 fatty acids, making them an excellent choice for the health-conscious consumer. Our Steelhead are raised in mountain-fed artisanal waters without the use of antibiotics or hormones. While wild steelhead are a threatened or endangered species, these cultured steelhead are sustainable and are both Ocean Wise “Recommended” and ranked Seafood Watch “Best Choice” .
Steelhead are a fabulous fish! They have orange/red flesh like salmon but the flavour is milder like a cross between salmon & trout. The flesh has medium flakes and is perfectly suited for baking, broiling, grilling, poaching, sauteing and smoking. Hand portioned into 6 oz portions makes these Wholesome and Yummy Steelhead Portions a convenient and recipe ready option. Why not try them with our delicious Lemon Linguini recipe for a light summer meal.
What a gorgeous fish! The color was spectacular and the flesh was soft and firm at the same time, in the best way possible. The flesh was a little dryer but rich once sliced for sashimi, stupendous texture and will work perfectly in sushi rolls as well. Tastes so much better than farmed salmon! It looked as if someone cranked up the vibrance and saturation irl!
